A meeting of the Council of Ministers' Committee for National Security and Defense, chaired by Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, has been urgently convened in Poland. The meeting was called amid unconfirmed reports that two missiles had struck Poland during a massive Russian rocket attack on Ukraine.
Polish Radio ZET reported the explosions in the village of Przewodów in the Lublin Voivodeship near the border with Ukraine. According to these reports, two people were killed.
The Polish prime minister urged the media not to replicate unverified information and said that the meeting would be held on the “Ukrainian crisis.” Morawiecki gave no other details.
Radio Lublin reports another version. The incident in Przewodów occurred around 3:40 p.m. at the transfer scales at an agricultural facility, where tractors with cargo are usually weighed. This information was confirmed by the local police. According to preliminary conclusions, the tractor, which drove into the scales, suddenly exploded. Radio Lublin also reports the death of two people.
The Polish Air Force has scrambled fighter planes from Tomaszów Lubelski airfield. The army and prosecutor's office has arrived at the site of the incident in Przewodów, reports Visegrad.
According to US intelligence, Russian missiles were seen flying into Poland, the Associated Press reported citing a high-ranking official.
Polish military expert Jaroslaw Wolski suggested that explosion could have been caused by a Russian cruise missile or a Ukrainian air defense missile.
Latvian Defense Minister Artis Pabriks tweeted about the explosion and expressed his condolences to Poland.
“My condolences to our Polish brothers in arms. Criminal Russian regime fired missiles which target not only Ukrainian civilians but also landed on NATO territory in Poland. Latvia fully stands with Polish friends and condemns this crime,” wrote Pabriks.
