“I will deal with it on another level”: Putin spokesman's son refuses to report to military enlistment office

Dmitry Nizovtsev, host of Popular Politics, a YouTube channel created by Alexei Navalny's supporters, called Nikolai Peskov, son of Russian President Dmitry Peskov's press secretary, live on the air.

Under the guise of a military commissar, Nizovtsev said that a summons had been sent and ordered him to come in for a medical examination the next day at 10 am.

“You must understand, if you know that I am Mr. Peskov, how wrong it is for me to be there. In short, I will deal with it on another level,” Peskov's son replied.

In the course of the conversation, he said he won't be coming to the military enlistment office and did not give his consent to enlist as a volunteer.

“I need to understand in general what is going on and what rights I have. For them to take me away tomorrow - believe me, neither you nor I need that. I have no problem defending my homeland - but I need to understand the expediency of my appearance there, I am talking about certain political nuances,” he added.

Peskov Jr. also said that he shouldn't be named as a volunteer in the documents. “I'll do what I'm told. If Vladimir Vladimirovich says I need to go there, I will go. I'm not rank and file.”

On September 21, President Vladimir Putin announced a «partial mobilization» in Russia. His decree is vaguely worded: it contains neither criteria nor quotas for mobilization, so anyone may be sent to the front, according to experts interviewed by The Insider.

Sergei Shoigu, head of the Russian Defense Ministry, said that mobilization will affect about 300,000 reservists, mostly citizens who have signed a contract to stay in the reserve. However, the document itself does not contain this clause. According to Shoigu, students won't be called up. However, just three days ago, on September 19, United Russia proposed granting university students academic leaves for the duration of their deployment to Ukraine.
