Leonid Volkov, a close associate of the murdered Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, was assaulted outside his house with a hammer earlier today, according to members of Navalny’s team. Volkov currently resides in Vilnius, Lithuania.
“Leonid Volkov @leonidvolkov has just been attacked outside his house. Someone broke a car window and sprayed tear gas in his eyes, after which the attacker started hitting Leonid with a hammer. Leonid is now at home, police and ambulance are on their way to him,” tweeted Yulia Navalnaya's spokeswoman Kira Yarmysh.
The report of the attack was also confirmed by Anti-Corruption Foundation director Ivan Zhdanov. He published photos of the aftermath of the attack on Volkov on Telegram:
“The attack took place outside the house. They beat [Leonid’s] legs with a hammer and nicked his hands,” Zhdanov later clarified.
Update: The Lithuanian police has confirmed that the attack took place in Vilnius at Žuvedrų st. at 10: 06 p.m. on March 12. The statement, cited by the publication Delfi, said that “a Russian citizen, was beaten outside his home.” Volkov was not mentioned in the statement by name.
