Earthquake strikes China, at least 95 dead

An earthquake in southwestern China has killed at least 95 people. Another 130 sustained injuries varying in severity, CCTV reports.

The 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck at 09:05 in Tingri County in the Tibet Autonomous Region in southwestern China, near the border with Nepal. As reported by the U.S. Geological Survey, the epicenter of the tremors was located at a depth of roughly 10 kilometers at a site 163 kilometers from the city of Shigatse, which has a population of approximately 800,000 people.

Local authorities have temporarily closed the Everest Landscape Park to tourists.

According to the China Earthquake Network, the quake in Tibet was the largest in the past five years. Over that period, the region has seen 29 earthquakes with a magnitude of 3.0 or above.
