Despite serious setbacks during the first 10 months of the war, the Russian military is developing plans for large-scale infantry attacks similar to the tactics used by the Soviet Union during World War II, Mykhailo Podolyak, an adviser to the Ukrainian president, said during a recent interview with The New York Times.
These predictions are based on intelligence findings – both internal and foreign – as well as consultations with Ukraine’s allies.
According to Podolyak, Russia has already drafted and is training soldiers who could be involved in massive infantry attacks.
“Russia’s political leadership clearly refuses to acknowledge the tactical defeats that already took place and grasps at any, even the most illusory, chances to change the situation in its favor,” Podolyak said.
As highlighted by the NYT, Ukraine's senior military and political leadership had previously warned that Russia was amassing troops and weapons to launch a new ground offensive in the spring, which would likely include a second attempt to capture Kyiv.
