Lyubomir Korba, who is suspected of attempting to assassinate GRU deputy chief Vladimir Alexeyev on Feb. 6, was recruited by the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) alleged in a statement that was cited by state-controlled news agency RIA Novosti.
“Lyubomir Korba acted as the direct perpetrator of the attack, while Viktor Vasin served as his accomplice. Lyubomir Korba was recruited by an SBU officer in August 2025 in the city of Ternopil,” the FSB said.
The Russian agency claimed that the suspect’s son, Luboš Korba, along with Polish intelligence services, were involved in the recruitment. Korba allegedly underwent firearms training in Kyiv and later traveled to Russia via Chisinau, Moldova and Tbilisi, Georgia. He was promised $30,000 for killing Alexeyev, the FSB said.
An alleged accomplice, Zinaida Serebritskaya, rented an apartment in the building on Volokolamsk Highway where the attack against the general took place. The key the gunman used to enter the building, along with a pistol fitted with a silencer, were hidden in a cache in the Moscow Region. The FSB said another alleged accomplice, Viktor Vasin, was a supporter of the Alexei Navalny-founded Anti-Corruption Foundation (ACF) and acted for what Russian authorities described as “terrorist motives.”
The attempt on the life of GRU deputy chief Lt. Gen. Vladimir Alexeyev took place on the morning of Feb. 6, when he was ambushed on a stairwell inside his apartment building as he was leaving for work. The gunman fired four shots, and Alexeyev sustained wounds in the abdomen, chest, and limbs. He was taken to intensive care and regained consciousness after emergency surgery over the weekend.
Korba was detained in Dubai and extradited to Russia on Feb. 8, with the FSB releasing a video of his transfer to Moscow. He has been reported to be a Russian citizen. The FSB’s Public Relations Center earlier named three suspects in the attempted assassination of Alexeyev, according to reports by state-controlled news agency TASS and Kremlin-aligned Izvestia.
Korba, born in 1960, was named as the direct perpetrator of the attack, while his alleged accomplices were said to be Russian citizens Viktor Vasin, born in 1959, and Zinaida Serebritskaya, born in 1971. Vasin was detained in Moscow, while Serebritskaya, the FSB said, managed to leave for Ukraine.
